The title of the song was originally inspired by a novel by New York author Arthur Nersesian (Portable Press, 1992), which describes a "young man's adventure through the bowels of the East Village during the 1980's."
The actual content of the song lyrics is pretty self-explanatory.
The music came together at Mark's Stagger Home Studio in Oslo. Exactly when is a good question, although one can assume that it all happened in 2018 or 2019. It probably began with Leon's psychotic riff on the bass along with Ted's magnificently rhythmic banging on his Gretsch drum kit and his Zildjian cymbals. Then Romek and Mark joined the madness with their respective guitars and wailing effects boxes. And the rest just exploded into what you hear right here.

THE FUCK-UP
(lyrics by Mark Steiner)
Each time you invite me for a drink
Somehow my money disappears
And every time you give me a little wink
Somehow my eyes well up with tears
Every time you invite me to your bed
Somehow I end up on the floor
And each time you leave and go to work
I wake up feeling like I am such a whore
At the end of the day, I'm just a fuck-up
And you wonder why I'm such a fuck-up
Sometimes you treat me like a man
And I feel like I can be on top
But most times you treat me like a dog
And I know that this will never stop
At the end of the day, I'm just a fuck-up
And you wonder why I'm such a fuck-up

Mark Steiner is a well-known figure in Oslo’s music underworld, and he’s been around in Norway for so long that many assume
that he is Norwegian. He is not. This ex-New Yorker is a wandering scoundrel who one might find hanging out in the shadowy corners of a pub at closing time. A international musical vagrant who might walk the streets with Stuart Staples, Nick Cave, and Rowland S. Howard......more
