about

MONSTER

Monster began as a loose sketch during pre-Covid era jam sessions at Stagger Home Studios. Based on the introductory bass riff as delivered by Leon, the band half-jokingly called it "Leon's Monster." Eventually, the gang agreed that it should be on the album, and an arrangement was mapped out prior to the recording sessions at Rabben Studios at Nesodden which took place during the summer of 2022. The lyrics came a bit later, and are a dark introspective reflection on inner turmoil, addiction to external impulses, shame and self-destructive behaviour brought on by the consumption of alcohol.

MONSTER
lyrics by Mark Steiner

My eyes are closing
Dead weight upon my chest
Draws me deep into this darkness
I just want to get some rest

See the horizon, lights in the sky
City’s on fire, end of the night
Everything is over
Everywhere is nowhere

Burning from the inside
Hungry for a feast
A silent scream into the void
Won’t scare away the beast
Careful what you wish for
What you find is yours to keep
Try to swim, just don’t drink of me
If you should taste me in your sleep

See the horizon, lights in the sky
City’s on fire, end of the night
Everything is over
Everywhere is nowhere

As we fall, are we dreaming?
Are we trapped in this feeling?
As we fall, are we screaming?
Are we trapped on the ceiling?

And I’m waiting for you
And I hunger for you

It’s just the monster (Do you think I’m a monster?)
The monster waiting for you
Make it go away
Make me go away
Try to make me disappear

I’m just a monster
Make it (me) go away

about

Mark Steiner & His Problems Oslo, Norway

Mark Steiner is a well-known figure in Oslo’s music underworld, and he’s been around in Norway for so long that many assume that he is Norwegian. He is not. This ex-New Yorker is a wandering scoundrel who one might find hanging out in the shadowy corners of a pub at closing time. A international musical vagrant who might walk the streets with Stuart Staples, Nick Cave, and Rowland S. Howard... ... more
